Dr. John Thorp, professor of philosophy at UWO, will speak about the origins of Christian ethics in secular Neoplatonist philosophy, the rupture between Christian and secular ethics during the mid-20th century, and the implications of the stupendous growth of neuroscience for the future development of secular ethics. This is a topic of particular interest to Humanists, addressing the question of how we can have a well-grounded ethics and morality without belief in a god.
