Ayaan Hirsi Ali once said, “Tolerance of intolerance is cowardice.” The extent to which religious belief should be tolerated in an open, free, and secular society, from a legal perspective to a broader social one, is a subject of hot debate. How does this tie in to freedom of speech, and does such include the right to offend? What happens when liberal values conflict with religious ones?At what point does a line need to be drawn where certain views and practices are not accepted? Is it important to distinguish between ideas and the people who hold them? And is there a relation between belief and behaviour which needs to be acknowledged? With people more connected than ever before, now is the time to discuss how to best achieve a peaceful and prosperous global civilization.
