Magic, Religion and Science: Putting Evidence to Work
Evidence features centrally in our world: it is key to our everyday decision-making, government policy-making, scientific practices and much else. But evidence does not speak for itself. Whether for doctors or diviners, policymakers or parish priests, evidence must be generated and put to work. This talk will ask how evidence is produced and mobilized in varied contexts, by considering a set of key questions. What counts as evidence? Whose evidence counts, and when? How are the uncertainties surrounding evidence managed? And when is evidence good enough to act?
